Anthony Gordon Condemns Pundits for 'Nonsense' Remarks

Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon has launched a scathing attack on football pundits Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer, accusing them of spreading 'complete nonsense' regarding his recent absence from the starting lineup. The 25-year-old striker expressed his frustration after the pundits questioned why he did not start in Newcastle's crucial Champions League fixture against Barcelona on Tuesday.

Gordon Defends His Champions League Absence

Gordon, who came on as a second-half substitute during Newcastle's 1-1 draw with Barcelona at St. James's Park, revealed he had been unable to train for several days due to illness. 'When I got to the stadium the manager told me I wasn't playing, which I didn't like very much, but that's his decision and the team played well,' Gordon explained. 'Saying I didn't want to play in the biggest game of my career is absolute nonsense.'

The forward specifically addressed comments made by Rooney during the match coverage. 'I think Rooney said I went past and didn't shake their hands and went into the changing room. I didn't,' Gordon stated. 'I got changed by myself in a changing room the size of this. It was just me and a sink. Complete nonsense. I think they need to do better at what they are doing.'

Pundits Question Gordon's Fitness and Commitment

During Tuesday's broadcast, Shearer had remarked that it would take 'something extraordinary to keep myself out of this game,' while fellow pundit Roy Keane expressed confusion on The Overlap about why Gordon was fit enough to come on as a substitute but not to start the match.

Gordon addressed these criticisms directly after scoring the decisive goal in Newcastle's 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge - their first win at the ground in 14 years. 'Usually I don't like to clear stuff up because I don't care too much, but this one does need clearing up because it was just nonsense,' Gordon stated during his post-match interview on Match of the Day.

Gordon's Decisive Goal Against Chelsea

The forward's crucial tap-in from Joe Willock's unselfish pass came after Newcastle exploited Chelsea's disorganised pressing system. The goal condemned Chelsea to their fourth home Premier League defeat of the season and highlighted Newcastle's tactical awareness.

Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior attributed the goal to defensive errors. 'It was a tactical issue,' he explained. 'We press in a different way to most teams. It's a new way of pressing. We don't step on the press and then we don't cover in the position that we should have done. Mistakes happen. They had nothing in the game and we gave them a goal.'

Rosenior added: 'The press was the reason they had to kick long balls back to us. It feels like at the moment, every mistake we're making is ending up in the back of our net.'

Gordon's public criticism of established pundits represents a significant moment in the ongoing dialogue between players and media commentators, highlighting the tensions that can arise when former players analyse current professionals' decisions and performances.
