Leeds United £20m Transfer in Limbo After Spygate Scandal

The conclusion of Southampton's Spygate inquiry could have significant consequences for Leeds United's transfer ambitions. The Premier League outfit are reportedly eyeing Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney, with the Championship club believed to be holding out for £20 million for his signature.

The 23-year-old is set to enter the final year of his deal. However, any potential transfer could well hinge on the verdict handed down to the Saints, who were charged by the EFL for spying on a Middlesbrough training session just two days before the first leg of their play-off semi-final.

The EFL confirmed that a disciplinary hearing would be held on or before Tuesday, with Tonda Eckert's side currently scheduled to face Hull City in the Wembley play-off final on Saturday.

Having secured their Premier League status earlier this month, Leeds will be eager to strengthen their squad, though their pursuit of Hackney could be impacted by the ruling. Should Middlesbrough be reinstated into the play-offs and go on to win promotion, the club may opt to hold onto their prized asset or slap a considerably heftier price tag on him.

Conversely, if the commission rules in Southampton's favour, Middlesbrough could struggle to retain Hackney and would lose much of their bargaining power, potentially leaving Leeds able to land him for considerably less than the original asking price.

Leeds United's Premier League Return

Leeds' return to the Premier League has proven a triumph, with the Whites sitting 14th in the table with just one match remaining. Despite appearing to be prime relegation candidates as recently as March, Farke's men have embarked on a remarkable eight-game unbeaten run since that point.

Following a 1-0 victory over Brighton courtesy of Dominic Calvert-Lewin's stoppage-time strike, the German manager addressed supporters directly at Elland Road to praise their unwavering backing.

Farke's Message to Fans and Ownership

He also delivered a pointed message to the club's ownership, setting out his vision for Leeds going forward. Farke said: "This game more or less sums up perfectly our whole season. The mentality, spirit and fight in this dressing room is second to none."

"This is why we can celebrate all together today. So thanks a lot for all your support, it is second to none. Just a final promise - I know we have the best fans in this country, it's second to none."

"Right now we are also working to get one of the best teams in this country. Thanks a lot." Leeds end their season on Sunday away to West Ham, whose relegation could be confirmed if Tottenham defeat Chelsea on Tuesday night.
