Canadian ice hockey star Nathan MacKinnon has become an internet sensation for all the wrong reasons after his visibly unimpressed reaction to receiving a stuffed toy during the medal ceremony following Canada's heartbreaking overtime loss to the USA in the Olympic gold medal match.
Moments after Jack Hughes scored the winning goal 1 minute and 41 seconds into overtime, the Canadian team lined up to collect their silver medals. Alongside the medals, each player was handed a miniature version of the Olympic mascot, a white stoat named Tina. Television cameras captured MacKinnon staring at the plush toy, shaking his head in disgust, and then staring coldly into the distance.
Social media users were quick to comment on the awkward moment. One fan wrote, 'Nathan MacKinnon not impressed with the silver and the plushie,' while another joked, 'Nathan MacKinnon might murder this stuffed animal.' The tradition of giving medal winners mini mascots has led to similar awkward moments in past Olympics.
MacKinnon later appeared to take a dig at the victorious US team, saying, 'You be the judge of who was the better team today,' according to Canadian press reporter Joshua Clipperton. Canada had dominated much of the game but were repeatedly denied by US goaltender Connor Hellebuyck.
Meanwhile, US hero Jack Hughes expressed his pride after scoring the golden goal. 'This is all about our country right now,' he said. 'I'm so proud to be American. I love my country, I love my teammates. That's American hockey right there.' His comments drew praise from US Vice President JD Vance, who wrote on X: 'Heart full of pride for his country and a few front teeth gone missing. Congratulations to Jack and everyone on Team USA for bringing home the gold.'
