Manchester City forward Rayan Cherki delivered a touching moment of kindness this week by visiting a young supporter in hospital. The French international, who joined City in a £34 million transfer from Lyon last summer, travelled to the Leon Berard cancer centre in Lyon to meet the fan.
A Special Connection and a New Celebration
During the visit, the young fan taught Cherki a unique goal celebration to perform after his next score. The celebration involves making a goggle-like gesture with both hands, with one placed in front of the eyes and the other extended forward. Cherki shared a photograph of the meeting on Instagram, captioning it: 'Next celebration with the boss.' The image shows the 22-year-old player, dressed in all white, standing beside the fan who was seated in a hospital bed.
Timing Ahead of Crucial Fixtures
Cherki will be hoping to showcase this new celebration soon, potentially as early as this weekend when Manchester City face Leeds United in their next Premier League fixture. City are currently engaged in a tight title race, aiming to reclaim the Premier League trophy after losing it to Liverpool last season. However, they face a significant challenge, with Arsenal currently leading the table by five points.
Manchester City do hold a game in hand and still have a crucial home match against Arsenal scheduled, effectively putting the title destiny within their own control. Cherki has been instrumental in City's title push this season, contributing nine goals and nine assists across 34 appearances since his arrival. Notably, only 19 of those appearances have been starts, as he continues to work towards securing a regular spot in the starting lineup.
Team Dynamics and Manager's Movements
City players appeared to have some downtime this week, with manager Pep Guardiola visiting his former club Brescia in Italy on Sunday. Guardiola seemingly opted not to watch Arsenal's north London derby, instead travelling to see Brescia play against Pro Patria in Serie C after City's 2-1 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday.
The team enjoys a rare free midweek before returning to action at Elland Road against Leeds on Saturday, providing a brief respite in a demanding season. Cherki's hospital visit underscores the positive impact footballers can have off the pitch, bringing joy to fans during challenging times.
