Manchester United in Talks for Mid-Season Friendlies, Carrick Confirms

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has publicly confirmed that the club is engaged in discussions regarding the possibility of playing mid-season friendly matches abroad. This announcement comes amidst persistent rumours linking the Premier League giants to lucrative exhibition games in countries such as Saudi Arabia.

Schedule Gaps Prompt Friendly Discussions

Carrick stated that while talks are ongoing, no final decisions have been made on how to utilise the unexpected gaps in United's fixture list. The club exited both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup in the early rounds this season, creating free weekends in February and March during the fifth and sixth rounds of the FA Cup.

"At this stage, nothing's confirmed," Carrick remarked during his pre-match press conference ahead of United's weekend clash with Tottenham. "We're aware of the schedule, and there are some spaces that we can use in different ways, so it's all up for discussion at the moment. But nothing's been decided, and it might happen or it might not, we'll just have to wait and see."

Financial Incentives and Competitive Edge

Reports have suggested that Manchester United could secure approximately £5 million per match for such friendlies, presenting a significant financial incentive. However, Carrick may also view these potential games as an opportunity to maintain his squad's match sharpness during extended breaks.

United's schedule currently features notable gaps, including an 11-day interval between their match against Newcastle on 4 March and the visit of Aston Villa on 15 March. This is followed by a substantial 22-day break between an away fixture at Bournemouth on 20 March and a home match against Leeds United on the weekend of 11 April.

With the team still competing for Champions League qualification—currently sitting fourth in the Premier League—Carrick emphasised the importance of continuous improvement. "The players have been spot on and fully focused. We’re all aware of the bigger situation and what might happen," he added.

Carrick's Impact and Player Updates

Since taking over as interim manager, Carrick has overseen a positive upturn in form, with three consecutive victories. He praised the squad's dedication, stating, "As a player, you focus on what’s ahead of you, trying to achieve what you can at this moment in time and the rest of the season. I’ve got no concerns. The lads have been better than you can imagine. We’re focused on being better, improving and getting ourselves and this club to where we want to be. Small steps but it’s a big end to the season."

In other news, Carrick provided updates on injured players Mason Mount and Matthijs de Ligt, confirming both are nearing returns to the squad. "Mason sooner [than de Ligt]. He’s not too far away. We’re hopeful it won’t be too long. Matta [de Ligt] is working his way back, taking good steps and improving and being really positive. Hopefully won't be too long," the interim boss concluded.
