Manchester United return to Premier League action against Sunderland AFC on Saturday afternoon. However, the Red Devils are likely to have one eye on the upcoming summer transfer window.
Champions League Qualification Secured
United secured qualification to the Champions League with a 3-2 win over Liverpool on home soil last weekend and will look to bolster their first-team for continual growth this summer, which will in-turn allow them to compete in both domestic and European competition going forward.
Casemiro is set to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season. The Premier League titans will look to replace him as a priority given just how essential he has been in their engine room. However, a number of other positions are in need of reinforcement in the coming months.
An Eager Frenkie de Jong Offer
United legend Jaap Stam has offered to play a part in the potential transfer of De Jong this summer, claiming he would be willing to "cycle to Barcelona" to bring him back to Greater Manchester. Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, the Dutchman said: "I think Frenkie de Jong would be the ideal player, he is very good with the ball. We can talk about his physique in the Premier League, maybe, because if you look at the individual duels, the tackles and the physical aspect, of course he’s not the greatest, but he’s a very good player. So, if the opportunity presents itself for United, I would help them. I’ll cycle to Barcelona and bring him to United, no problem."
An ambitious acquisition, De Jong is contracted at Camp Nou until 2029 and as a major player, the La Liga giants will likely look to retain him for the new season to complement the likes of Pedri and Gavi. However, with 20 goals and 31 assists to his name from 295 appearances for Barca, the 28-year-old has proven his quality time and time again.
De Jong is not the only midfielder that United have been linked with as a potential successor to Casemiro. Over the past couple of months, interest in the likes of Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali has been shown. But it is Atalanta star Ederson who seems to be the most viable option at present. Reports suggest that the Red Devils are huge admirers of the Brazilian, who could be available for as little as £44million this summer.
David De Gea Makes Return Call
De Gea has seemingly left the door open for a return to Old Trafford this summer, with claims that the Spaniard would only leave Fiorentina for a reunion with Manchester United. The 35-year-old was a revelation for the Red Devils between 2011 and 2023, keeping 188 clean sheets in 545 appearances while clinching a Premier League title, six domestic cups and a Europa League with the club.
However, loyal to Fiorentina since 2024, De Gea has reportedly explained that the only club he would leave the Florence-based outfit for this summer is United. It's unlikely that United would consider bringing the shot-stopper back to the north west considering the influx of competition in the position. On top of Senne Lammens thriving in between the sticks since his arrival from Royal Antwerp last summer, United also have Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana on their books - the latter enjoying a season-long loan spell with Trabzonspor this season which, albeit, could be made permanent if recent speculation is anything to go off.
