Rory McIlroy Doubts LIV Golf's Future After Saudi Funding Ends
McIlroy Questions LIV Golf Future After Saudi Exit

Rory McIlroy has cast doubt on the future of LIV Golf following the Saudi Public Investment Fund's (PIF) decision to withdraw financial support beyond this season. The Northern Irish golfer, speaking at the Truist Championship, dismissed the league's chances of recovery after incurring multi-billion pound losses over four years.

McIlroy's Verdict on LIV's Prospects

When asked about LIV's future, McIlroy stated: "They’re going to go and try and find alternative investment, whatever that may look like. But when one of the wealthiest sovereign wealth funds in the world thinks that you’re too expensive for them, that sort of says something." The six-time major champion has been a persistent critic of the rival tour, which has sparked controversy throughout his career.

LIV Golf 'Offer' Denied

Alongside Tiger Woods, McIlroy was among the biggest names to resist Saudi riches and stay on the PGA Tour. In 2024, he refuted reports of an $850 million offer and equity stake in LIV, telling the Golf Channel: "I honestly don't know how these things get started. I've never been offered a number from LIV, and I've never contemplated going to LIV." He added that while he does not judge those who joined, his future remains on the PGA Tour.

Ryder Cup Relationship Repaired

McIlroy's opposition to LIV initially fractured his friendship with Sergio Garcia after the Spaniard defected. However, the pair reconciled at the 2023 US Open. Garcia expressed relief, saying: "I feel like I gained a friend back... that to me means a lot." He admitted he had hesitated but was encouraged by McIlroy's reaction.

Bryson DeChambeau's Plans

Bryson DeChambeau, amid LIV's uncertainty, suggested he would focus on his YouTube channel and major tournaments if the league folds. McIlroy responded by acknowledging he was "too judgmental" toward those who joined LIV but questioned the competitiveness of players unwilling to compete on the PGA Tour: "If you want to be the most competitive golfer you can be, this is the place to be. And if you don’t want to play here, I think that says something about you."
