Paul Merson Claims Tottenham Keep Igor Tudor Only Due to Liverpool Fixture
Merson: Tottenham Keep Tudor Only Because of Liverpool Game

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has made a bold assertion regarding the precarious position of Igor Tudor at Tottenham Hotspur. Merson insists that Tudor is only still in charge as interim manager because no other coach is willing to walk into a fixture against Liverpool.

Mounting Pressure on Interim Boss

Tudor is under immense scrutiny and pressure following a disastrous start to his tenure. He has lost all four matches since taking over as interim boss, with the latest setback being a crushing 5-2 defeat by Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. This loss has drawn significant criticism, particularly concerning his man-management of players.

Controversial Goalkeeper Decision

During the Champions League match, Tudor's decision-making came under fire when he opted to start Antonin Kinsky in goal over regular choice Guglielmo Vicario. After Kinsky made two critical errors within just fifteen minutes, Tudor substituted him, bringing Vicario onto the pitch. As Kinsky left the field and headed down the tunnel, Tudor notably ignored him, while other players rushed to show concern for the goalkeeper.

Survival Against the Odds

Despite widespread predictions of his imminent dismissal, Tudor remains in his role and is set to oversee this weekend's Premier League clash against Liverpool. A defeat in this match could see Tottenham officially slip into the bottom three of the league table, exacerbating their crisis.

Merson's Blunt Assessment

According to Merson, there is only one reason why Tudor will still be in charge for the Liverpool game: because no other manager wants the job under these circumstances. When asked on Sky Sports if he was surprised that Tudor is still managing Spurs, Merson replied, 'I am and I'm not. I am because of the results and I'm not because it's Liverpool away.'

He elaborated, 'I don't know what manager would want to come in for that game. There are timings - I think they will wait until this game is over and it gives them another week then before the big game.'

Merson dismissed the idea that an incoming manager could view the Liverpool match as an opportunity, referencing past examples like Ange Postecoglou's difficult start. 'No,' he stated bluntly. 'Who did we see it with, Ange? At Forest? he took it at Arsenal, they got ripped to shreds and it was the start of going down. It's not a free hit at all, you come in and get beat three or four and it's, "what has he done?".'

He concluded, 'I think they will wait and I'll be shocked if he's manager next week against Nottingham Forest.'

Tudor's Defiant Stance

Ahead of the Liverpool match, Tudor himself addressed the speculation about his position, claiming he 'laughs' at the notion that a different coach could perform better. In an interview with Sky Sports on Friday, he said, 'People think a new coach will come in and things will change and the problems will resolve. It makes me laugh.'

He added, 'When people want a new coach, it's a new hope. People always want new hope that things will change but the reality is totally different. The reality is not that.'

Tudor acknowledged the challenging environment, stating, 'In this world where everyone has an opinion, you can never win. But as coaches we have to focus on what we can change. We need to stay calm and believe in ourselves.'

This comes as Tottenham continues to struggle under his leadership, with many questioning his tactics and management style following the Champions League humiliation and overall team performance.
