Morocco's dream of winning a second Africa Cup of Nations title ended in heartbreak on Sunday night, as Senegal defeated the hosts 1-0 in a chaotic final in Rabat. The Atlas Lions, who had not won the tournament since 1976, saw their hopes dashed after Pape Gueye scored the winning goal in the 94th minute of extra time.
The match was marred by controversy. In added time, Senegal had a goal disallowed before Morocco were awarded a penalty. Senegal players walked off the pitch in protest, causing a long delay. Brahim Díaz then missed the spot-kick with a Panenka attempt that was easily saved. The game went to extra time, where Gueye's left-footed strike secured Senegal's second Afcon title.
Moroccan media reacted with disappointment. Le360.ma lamented, 'There will be no second star for Morocco. The dream and the ambition will have to wait some time.' Head coach Walid Regragui faced calls to resign despite his impressive record, which includes a World Cup semi-final in 2022. Le Matin reported, 'Regragui didn't bring the cup like he promised.'
Regragui avoided questions about his future in the post-match press conference. Hesport.com noted that Morocco won awards for best goalkeeper, top scorer, and fair play, but 'the big one eluded them.' Díaz apologised to the Moroccan people after his missed penalty, according to Rue20.com.
Senegal celebrated their victory, with Wiwsport.com describing the final as 'chaotic' and praising coach Pape Thiaw for leading his team to a 'historical second title.' RTS, Senegal's national broadcaster, said 'the Lions were stronger than that injustice.'
