Neil Warnock is poised to depart his role at Torquay United after a mere two weeks in charge, marking a swift conclusion to his unexpected return from retirement. The 77-year-old veteran manager, who previously led the club in the early 1990s, stepped in as an unpaid advisor following the sacking of former boss Paul Wotton in late February.
Warnock's Brief Stint and Club's Managerial Search
During his short-lived tenure, Warnock oversaw four matches, securing two victories that positioned Torquay fourth in the National League South table. However, the club is now accelerating its hunt for a permanent manager, with Warnock confirming he has refrained from influencing the board's decision-making process.
"The interview process has taken place, they have got in mind the people or the person that they want," Warnock stated. "I know the candidates, but I said to the board that they have to do their due diligence. They need to appoint who they feel is the right one."
Club Statement Emphasises Caution in Appointment
In a statement released on Saturday afternoon, Torquay's board acknowledged the urgency for clarity but stressed the importance of a thorough selection process. "This is a hugely important decision for the medium-term future of Torquay United," the statement read. "It is one we simply have to get right. While we all want matters concluded as quickly as possible, it is more important that the Board completes a thorough process and secures the best possible candidate for our football club than rushes a decision we may later regret."
