NFL star Emeka Egbuka has been compelled to publicly address a social media controversy after an imposter X account, falsely claiming to be him, sparked outrage by questioning the reality of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). The Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver found himself at the centre of a storm this week when the account, under the handle @EgbukaEmeka, posted content that controversially asked, 'Is CTE even real?'
Understanding CTE and Its NFL Scrutiny
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative brain disease directly linked to repeated head trauma, such as concussions or sub-concussive blows. In recent years, CTE has come under intense scrutiny within the NFL community, with numerous former players being diagnosed posthumously with the condition, highlighting ongoing concerns about player safety and long-term health impacts.
Egbuka's Official Statement and Team Involvement
The post from the fake account triggered significant backlash among NFL fans, prompting both Egbuka and the Buccaneers to intervene. On Friday afternoon, Egbuka posted a statement on his verified Instagram account, firmly denying any association with the X account. 'I haven't had Twitter since high school,' Egbuka wrote. 'That account on X isn't me.'
However, the imposter account had already deceived numerous fans and even the Buccaneers organization itself. The NFL franchise inadvertently lent credibility to the fake profile by tagging it repeatedly on X. This began when the Buccaneers' official account first tagged @EgbukaEmeka to announce they had selected Egbuka with the 19th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Prolonged Misidentification and Broader Impact
Just three minutes after the initial draft announcement, Tampa Bay shared a video of Commissioner Roger Goodell announcing the Egbuka pick, once again tagging the imposter account. Over the past year, the Buccaneers tagged the account in an additional 56 posts, leading many social media users to believe it was Egbuka's legitimate profile. Despite this, Egbuka did not publicly dispute the team's use of the account or clarify the situation until this week's controversy erupted.
In response, the Buccaneers' communications team issued a statement on Wednesday, confirming the account's illegitimacy. 'The below account is neither owned nor operated by Emeka Egbuka. It is in no way affiliated with Emeka or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,' the team posted. Subsequently, the rogue @EgbukaEmeka account has been suspended by X.
Before its suspension, the fake account successfully duped several high-profile entities beyond the Buccaneers. Reports indicate that the National Football League Players Association, NFL Films, and multiple media members had followed the account, underscoring the widespread confusion and the challenges of verifying identities on social media platforms in the sports industry.
