Portugal stunned hosts France 1-0 in the Euro 2016 final in Paris, winning their first major trophy despite losing captain Cristiano Ronaldo to injury after just 24 minutes. Substitute Eder scored the decisive goal in extra time, leaving the French team heartbroken and their nation in tears.
Ronaldo, who was forced off with a knee injury, later returned to the touchline in a tracksuit, barking instructions to his teammates. At the final whistle, he led the celebrations as Portugal secured a historic victory. Centre-back Jose Fonte, who was playing in League One a few years ago, said: 'This could be a Hollywood movie. We’ve written our names in history.'
France captain Hugo Lloris expressed his disappointment: 'Football is cruel but it’s also magnificent. We gave everything tonight, we have no regrets.' Coach Didier Deschamps added: 'We had chances, but unfortunately they scored. It’s a great disappointment.'
Ronaldo, who has won every major club trophy, finally added an international honour to his collection. 'There was a lot of suffering, a very intense game. We fought very hard,' he said. 'This goes out to the whole nation.'
