Emma Raducanu suffered a straight-sets defeat in the first round of the French Open, losing 6-0, 7-6 (4) to unseeded Argentinian Solana Sierra. The world No. 39 struggled from the outset, losing the first set in just 25 minutes and failing to find her rhythm on Court 13.
Raducanu's Difficult Start
Twenty minutes into the match, Raducanu was already trailing 0-4, 30-40 on her serve. She responded by shanking a backhand high into the sky, epitomising a miserable day. Despite a late fightback in the second set, she could not force a decider.
In her post-match press conference, a tearful Raducanu admitted the challenges of constant setbacks. “It’s very difficult,” she said. “I think you need a lot of resilience. I’m trying my best each day.” She refused to blame lingering post-viral illness, citing a lack of match practice and confidence.
Jones Breaks Grand Slam Duck
Meanwhile, on an adjacent court, Fran Jones secured her first grand slam main-draw win. The 25-year-old Briton fought back from 1-6, 0-2 down to beat Beatriz Haddad Maia 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2. Jones described herself as a “mentality monster” after the victory.
Jones had lost all six previous grand slam main-draw matches, including a retirement at the Australian Open. This year has been particularly tough, with a bad fall, injury, and a concussion from a freak gym accident. “Everything I’ve been through this year, it’s really been challenging,” she said.
After the match, a tearful Jones embraced her parents in the crowd. “They’ve been on the other side of the world,” she noted. “It was a really challenge, and they’ve just suffered with me.”
Jones, who considers clay her favourite surface, is in the French Open main draw for the first time. She will face a tough opponent in the second round.
