Ollie Robinson smashed a magnificent century as Sussex launched an extraordinary fightback against Surrey on the first day of their County Championship clash at the Oval. From a precarious 92-7, the No. 10 batsman and No. 9 Jack Carson each hit hundreds to put Sussex in a commanding position.
Remarkable Recovery
After a morning session dominated by Surrey seamer Jordan Clark, who took 5-14, Sussex looked doomed. However, Carson and Robinson shared a stunning 173-run partnership for the eighth wicket. Carson reached his second first-class hundred with a nudge to midwicket off Reece Topley, while Robinson brought up his ton with a six over the boundary off Clark. Sussex captain immediately declared on 358-9.
Surrey's attack, missing Dan Worrall, Tom Lawes, and Gus Atkinson, struggled without a frontline spinner. Jamie Smith, deputising as wicketkeeper for the injured Ben Foakes, had a quiet day behind the stumps, taking two catches but watching helplessly as Sussex dominated.
