Romania Manager Mircea Lucescu Hospitalised After Collapse

Romania manager Mircea Lucescu, 80, was taken to hospital on Sunday after collapsing during a team meeting. The veteran coach is now in a stable condition and will undergo further tests.

Lucescu had been preparing his players for a friendly against Slovakia on Tuesday, following both nations' World Cup play-off defeats on Thursday. Romania lost 1-0 to Turkey, while Slovakia fell 4-3 at home to Kosovo.

Local reports state that Lucescu sat on a chair and 'switched off'. Two ambulances arrived at Romania's training camp after team medical staff provided initial assistance. Lucescu told Romanian outlet GSP: 'I'm okay now. I will be submitted to further testing.'

According to Turkish publication Fanatik, Lucescu joked to doctors in the ambulance: 'You were fast. You could be good strikers!'

Lucescu has been battling health issues in recent months. He previously told the Guardian: 'I'm not in my best shape so I would have stepped away if there was another option available. But I insist: I can't leave like a coward.'

The former Shakhtar Donetsk boss, who won the UEFA Cup in 2009, is in his second stint as Romania manager. He captained Romania at the 1970 World Cup and has coached 14 different clubs and countries over six decades.
