George Russell delivered a dominant performance in Montreal, securing pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix and winning the sprint race, as tensions flared with Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli. The 28-year-old Briton edged Antonelli by 0.068 seconds in qualifying, mirroring the same margin from Friday's sprint qualifying, to claim his fifth consecutive pole for Mercedes and third straight in Montreal.
Sprint Race Clash Ignites Title Rivalry
The previously calm title battle erupted during the sprint when Antonelli was forced onto the grass after contact with Russell at turn one. The Italian driver demanded a penalty, prompting team principal Toto Wolff to tell him to "stop the radio moaning." Antonelli's frustration led to a lock-up at turn eight, allowing Lando Norris to take second, and he ultimately finished third despite a late lunge on Norris.
Mercedes Mediates Between Drivers
Mercedes held a debrief between the sprint and qualifying to address the incident. Wolff told Sky Sports: "We sat them down and said, 'how do we want to race?' It is a framework they have established among themselves and we are happy. No one is expecting the other to leave space as it is too important." Antonelli, who had won the previous three races to build a 20-point lead, expressed his displeasure on the radio, saying: "If we need to race like this, that's good to know." Wolff urged him to discuss matters internally rather than on the radio.
Qualifying Results and Weather Concerns
McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri qualified third and fourth, while Lewis Hamilton will start fifth for Ferrari ahead of Max Verstappen in sixth. A rain hazard has been declared with over a 40% chance of wet weather for Sunday's race. The top 10 for qualifying: 1. George Russell, 2. Kimi Antonelli, 3. Lando Norris, 4. Oscar Piastri, 5. Lewis Hamilton, 6. Max Verstappen, 7. Isack Hadjar, 8. Charles Leclerc, 9. Arvid Lindblad, 10. Franco Colapinto.
