Sciver Brunt Urges England To Inspire Next Generation

England captain Heather Knight has stated her aim to “entertain and inspire” the next generation of cricketers on the eve of The Ashes. Knight said: “We’ve got the opportunity to do something special and part of that is bringing the country with us on that journey.”

The England XI for the one-off Test at Trent Bridge includes two high-risk, high-reward debuts: Lauren Filer and Danni Wyatt. Filer, 22, was described by Knight as “one of, if not the fastest” bowlers in the country. Wyatt, a white-ball veteran with 245 caps, has been given free rein in the middle-order, with Knight praising her as “one of the best attackers of spin in the world game”.

Knight emphasised the team’s desire to entertain, echoing the ethos of Ben Stokes’ men’s team. “We want to play cricket that people want to watch,” she said. England’s aggressive approach has been solidified under new head coach Jon Lewis, who arrived in autumn 2022.

Ticket sales for the series have been record-breaking, with 80,000 tickets sold in total, more than double the 32,000 for the 2019 Ashes. The Test at Trent Bridge has sold 14,500 tickets, compared to 7,500 for the same fixture in 2019. Knight said: “It’s super special and set to be the most visible series outside of World Cups we’ve ever had.”
