Sunday League Referee Assaulted by Player in Kent Over Contentious Decisions
A Sunday league football referee was violently assaulted by a player following a contentious match in Paddock Wood, Kent. The incident, which occurred in February 2023, left the referee with significant physical and psychological injuries, forcing him to cease officiating adult games.

Daniel Marks, aged 50, admitted to assaulting referee Peter Williams, aged 66, after becoming unhappy with decisions made during a West Kent Sunday League match between Insulators FC and Dormansland Rockets. The game ended in a contentious result, which further aggravated Marks, leading to the attack.
At Maidstone Magistrates' Court, prosecutor Vicky McGrady outlined the incident, stating that Marks approached Williams and placed his right arm across the referee's shoulder with a firm grip, causing swelling to Williams' neck. Williams fell to the floor, sustaining injuries including reddening to his neck, grazing to his face, and a cut lip.
During a Newton hearing, District Judge Claire Luxford noted the significant psychological impact on Williams, affecting his health and work both on and off the pitch. Williams, a retired police officer, reported feeling as though he had been taking his "last breath" during the assault and described never feeling "as frightened, helpless or close to death."
Legal Consequences and Impact on the Victim
Marks was ordered to pay a fine of £1,125 and compensation of £1,100 to Williams. He was also given a restraining order, prohibiting him from contacting Williams or attending venues where Williams is officiating football matches.
Defence lawyer Hannah Mirza stated that Marks, a father of one, was "genuinely remorseful" and had lost his head in a "moment of frustration," describing the behaviour as entirely out of character and an isolated lapse.
As a result of the assault, Williams has stopped refereeing adult football matches and now only officiates youth games. The court heard that the psychological trauma has had a lasting impact on his well-being and professional activities.
