Broncos Legend Tallis Questions Injured Captain Reynolds' Media Commitment
Brisbane Broncos captain Adam Reynolds has come under intense scrutiny from club legend Gorden Tallis for his decision to appear on Fox League's NRL coverage just one day after sustaining a rib injury. The incident occurred following Brisbane's disappointing loss to Parramatta at Suncorp Stadium, with Reynolds travelling to Sydney to participate in the broadcast of the Warriors versus Raiders and Roosters versus Rabbitohs double-header.
Tallis Questions Leadership and Optics
Speaking on Triple M's Sunday Sin Bin program, former Broncos enforcer Gorden Tallis openly questioned the perception of Reynolds' actions. Tallis argued that an injured captain should prioritise recovery and team leadership over television commitments, especially during a difficult start to the season for the struggling Broncos.
'It's not great optics when if he's really that sore, and I've done rib cartilage, you don't go to the press conference and you don't jump on a plane and fly to Sydney to do Fox Sports,' Tallis stated emphatically. 'You get yourself right [fit to play]. When you're down two [losses] and your club's under fire and you're the leader … there's a reason why Cameron Smith got brought to the club – lack of leadership.'
Tallis, who has been a regular critic of the Broncos and coach Michael Maguire on Fox League's NRL 360 panel show, emphasised that his comments were not a personal attack. 'That's the leadership there where you would look [and hope] he's going to give himself every opportunity to pull this club back to where it is. That's not picking on him,' he clarified.
Reynolds' Fitness Battle and Coach's Response
Adam Reynolds suffered suspected rib cartilage damage during the loss to Parramatta and is now in a race against time to be fit for the Broncos' round three showdown with the Melbourne Storm. Despite the injury, Reynolds remains optimistic about his availability for the grand final rematch, with the Broncos desperate to avoid slipping to a 0-3 start to the NRL season.
'I had scans [Friday] and they're all positive signs, there's no break there,' Reynolds told Fox League. 'Fingers crossed I get through the week. We'll pad it up and see how we go at training. I'll get some big boys running at me.'
The veteran halfback trained with heavily strapped ribs on Monday, managing most of the session despite lingering pain. He will undergo another crucial fitness test at Red Hill on Tuesday to determine his availability for Friday night's match.
When asked about Tallis's comments, coach Michael Maguire offered a measured response. 'I don't know, because I don't pay too much attention to it, you can probably tell me more about that … they should come to training and have a look, simple as that,' Maguire said, deflecting the criticism.
Broncos Alter Travel Plans and Consider Line-up Changes
In a bid to change the club's fortunes in Melbourne, coach Michael Maguire has already torn up Brisbane's usual travel routine. Instead of flying south the day before the match, the Broncos will travel on Wednesday and complete their captain's run at AAMI Park on Thursday. This strategic shift comes after last year's disastrous trip to Melbourne, where Brisbane lost several players to injury during the clash.
Maguire is also considering significant changes to his line-up, with winger Deine Mariner under pressure and forward Brendan Piakura pushing to return from injury. If Reynolds is unable to prove his fitness, Ben Hunt is likely to return to the starting team to partner Ezra Mam in the halves. Additionally, Jack Gosiewski is expected to be ruled out with concussion.
Despite the Broncos winning the 2025 NRL Grand Final, Maguire remains under pressure after the club lost its first three matches for 2026, including the World Club Challenge. The upcoming match against Melbourne Storm represents a critical opportunity to turn the season around and demonstrate strong leadership on and off the field.
