Tuchel Backs Ben White's England Return, Urges Defender to Clear Air
Tuchel Supports Ben White's England Comeback, Calls for Reconciliation

Tuchel Advocates for Ben White's England Recall Amid Squad Reconciliation

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has publicly endorsed Ben White's return to the national squad, stating the Arsenal defender "deserves a second chance" following his controversial departure from the 2022 World Cup camp. However, Tuchel emphasized that White must proactively "clear the air" with several teammates who were present during the Qatar tournament, where the 28-year-old left abruptly for personal reasons.

Controversial Exit and Denied Allegations

White, who previously featured in England's Euro 2020 squad and the World Cup in Qatar, exited during the knockout phase under circumstances the Football Association described as "personal reasons." Subsequent media reports suggested a heated confrontation with assistant coach Steve Holland, allegations consistently denied by former manager Gareth Southgate. Southgate revealed in March 2024 that White had voluntarily made himself unavailable for England selection, casting a shadow over his international future.

Tuchel's New Chapter Philosophy

Tuchel, who confirmed White's desire to return last year, adopted a forward-looking approach. "First of all, I think everyone deserves a second chance," the England manager stated. "I was also not 100 percent interested in what happened because I wanted to open a new page and a new book and a new opportunity."

The manager recounted White's immediate and enthusiastic response when asked about returning, describing the defender as "desperate to come back." When an injury to Jarell Quansah created an opening for the upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, White's reaction was reportedly "euphoric, positive, and very emotional," demonstrating his commitment.

Training Performance and Team Dynamics

Tuchel praised White's exceptional training performances in the current camp, highlighting his quality and professionalism. However, he underscored the importance of reconciliation within the squad. "I think it is necessary that he clears the air with his team-mates, and I think he does, and I think he will once players come back who were in the World Cup together with him," Tuchel explained.

The manager expressed confidence in White's integration, noting the defender currently feels "confident and comfortable" and has his full support. Tuchel also appealed for backing from England supporters, whose reaction at Wembley on Friday will be closely watched.

Controversial Selection Over Trent Alexander-Arnold

White's recall came at the expense of Real Madrid star Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose omission from Tuchel's initial 35-man squad sparked significant debate. Tuchel described the decision as a "sportive choice" that was "difficult, hard, and maybe to a certain degree unfair."

The manager justified his selection by referencing White's impressive performances for Arsenal, including the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City and Champions League matches. "It was the chance for me to meet him in person, to see how he interacts with the group," Tuchel added.

Tuchel acknowledged the controversy surrounding Alexander-Arnold's exclusion, stating he had personally called the player to explain the situation. "I know that it creates noise when you leave a player like Trent out," Tuchel admitted. "He just has to accept it."

The manager also cited competition from other right-back options including Tino Livramento and Djed Spence, who have performed well in previous camps and deserve minutes ahead of final World Cup selection decisions.
