UEFA has banned Azerbaijani football club PFK Turan Tovuz from participating in next season's Conference League, citing the club's involvement in activities aimed at influencing match outcomes. The decision, confirmed by UEFA's Appeals Body, stems from a 2019 disciplinary case where seven of the club's players were prohibited from football activities for match-fixing by the Azerbaijani football association.
Club Denies Wrongdoing
Turan Tovuz, which finished third in Azerbaijan's top flight, denies any wrongdoing and asserts its entitlement to compete in the Conference League. The club plans to appeal UEFA's ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Preparations Continue Despite Ban
Despite the ban, PFK Turan Tovuz is continuing its preparation plans for the Conference League, including a training camp in Turkey. The club maintains that it has not violated any regulations and is confident that the ban will be overturned.
UEFA's decision has sparked controversy, with the club claiming that the ban is based on outdated allegations. The case highlights ongoing efforts by European football's governing body to combat match-fixing and maintain the integrity of the sport.
