Manuel Ugarte Knee Injury Derails Manchester United Transfer Plans
Ugarte Injury Derails Man United Transfer Plans

Manchester United's planned midfield overhaul has hit a significant obstacle after Manuel Ugarte sustained a serious knee injury while representing Uruguay at the World Cup. The 23-year-old midfielder was stretchered off during Uruguay's 1-0 defeat to Spain on Friday night, a result that confirmed their elimination from the tournament. United have since confirmed the injury is a knee ligament issue, with the full extent and recovery timeline still under assessment.

Transfer Plans Disrupted

Michael Carrick's side had been expected to invest heavily in midfield targets this summer ahead of their return to the Champions League. A £35 million deal for Atlanta's Ederson is reportedly already signed, while Aurelien Tchouameni, Sandro Tonali, and Matheus Fernandes have all been linked with moves. However, future signings were contingent on outgoings, and Ugarte was among the players put up for sale.

Ugarte had attracted interest from Serie A clubs, but his injury now makes a summer transfer extremely unlikely. A club statement read: “Manchester United can confirm that Manuel Ugarte has suffered a knee ligament injury whilst representing Uruguay in Friday's World Cup group-stage match against Spain. Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the best course of treatment and the rehabilitation timescale. Everyone wishes Manuel a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way.”

Impact on Squad Overhaul

With Ugarte sidelined for several months, United will need to look elsewhere to raise funds for their squad rebuild. Striker Joshua Zirkzee, part of the Netherlands' World Cup squad, is expected to be offered for sale this summer. Marcus Rashford is also likely to depart after Barcelona declined to make his loan permanent earlier this summer. Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is also due to move on.

Ugarte's injury is a significant setback for United's midfield plans, as the club had hoped to offload him to generate funds for new signings. The Red Devils will now have to explore alternative options to finance their summer transfer business.
