Van Persie Defends Sterling Amid Criticism

Feyenoord manager Robin van Persie has delivered a passionate defence of Raheem Sterling after the English winger played what is expected to be his final match for the Dutch club. Sterling, 31, joined Feyenoord in February after leaving Chelsea, where he had been frozen out following an unsuccessful loan spell at Arsenal.

Sterling's Time at Feyenoord

The 82-cap England international signed a contract until the end of the Eredivisie season, which has now concluded. He played 72 minutes in Sunday's 2-0 victory away to Zwolle, helping Feyenoord secure second place in the league and a spot in the Champions League. Throughout his brief stint in Rotterdam, Sterling has faced heavy criticism from journalists and pundits.

Van Persie's Strong Words

Van Persie believes the criticism has been excessive. "He was unlucky at times," Van Persie said after the match. "But there were also a number of times where he was in a good position. In the second half, for example, when he produced a good run inside."

The former Arsenal and Manchester United striker expressed his frustration with the negativity surrounding Sterling. "Personally, I struggle with the cynicism surrounding him. I think respect is more appropriate. In any case, I don't like cynicism. I can't stand the whole atmosphere around him."

Van Persie pointed to Sterling's career achievements, saying: "He has scored 200 goals in England and played 82 international matches. And that is regardless of whether you think he plays well or not. But I think the way we handle this as a footballing nation is really very bad."

The Feyenoord boss revealed he will discuss Sterling's future with him, though reports in the Netherlands suggest the 31-year-old will not be offered a new deal. "I am going to discuss that with him tonight. We are having dinner with the group tonight. Then I will take a moment with him," Van Persie added.

Sterling's next move remains uncertain, but Van Persie's defence highlights the respect he believes the winger deserves.
