FIFA has defended referee Raphael Claus after US President Donald Trump described him as “suspect” following a controversial red card decision during the World Cup. The incident occurred when Claus sent off USA striker Folarin Balogun in their group-stage victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Red Card Suspension Lifted
Balogun’s one-match suspension for the dismissal was suspended for a year, allowing him to start for the World Cup hosts in their round of 16 tie against Belgium. Trump subsequently phoned FIFA President Gianni Infantino and urged the organisation to review Balogun’s dismissal. Days later, FIFA lifted the suspension entirely.
Trump admitted he spoke to Infantino about the incident but insisted the decision was made by FIFA—a line repeated by Infantino, who said an independent disciplinary panel made the call. However, during his explanation, Trump insulted Claus, calling him “a little bit suspect if you check his past” without offering evidence or further explanation.
FIFA's Statement of Support
In response, FIFA issued a statement defending Claus: “FIFA recognises Raphael Claus as one of the world’s leading professional referees and a valued member of Team One – FIFA’s elite group of referees – at the FIFA World Cup. Throughout his career, he has consistently demonstrated the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.”
Infantino added: “Once more, I reiterate that we must respect the referees and respect the rules that govern our game. It is very simple and cannot ever be overstated – without referees, there is no football.”
Ongoing Reaction
The controversy has divided the football world, with some supporting Trump’s call for review and others backing FIFA’s defence of Claus. The Mirror will continue to provide updates on this developing story.
