Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase has been suspended without pay for one game after spitting on Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Jalen Ramsey during Sunday's game. The incident occurred in the fourth quarter of the Bengals' 34-12 loss.
The NFL announced the suspension under a rule prohibiting acts contrary to generally understood principles of sportsmanship. Chase will miss the Bengals' home game against New England this weekend and will forfeit at least $448,333.33 in base salary, according to the NFL Players Association database.
After the game, Chase denied spitting, but video evidence from a Cincinnati television station confirmed the act. He did not speak to reporters on Monday. Bengals coach Zac Taylor said he discussed the incident with Chase, noting that the receiver must take responsibility for his actions.
This is the second spitting-related suspension this season. Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter was initially suspended for spitting on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott in Week 1 but avoided missing additional games after the league applied time served.
