Scotland’s first World Cup appearance in 28 years concluded in disappointment as they were eliminated in the group stage of the 2026 tournament. Head coach Steve Clarke promptly resigned following the campaign, extending the Tartan Army’s streak of never advancing past the group phase in nine attempts.
Group C campaign
Scotland opened Group C with a tense 1-0 victory over Haiti in Boston, courtesy of a second-half goal from John McGinn. However, they then suffered a 1-0 defeat to Morocco, who had reached the semi-finals in 2022. Ismael Saibari scored for Morocco after just 70 seconds, catching Scotland off guard.
In their final group match, Scotland faced Brazil, the record five-time World Cup champions. Brazil won 3-0 in Miami, with Vinicius Jr scoring twice and Matheus Cunha adding another goal.
Third-place ranking and elimination
Scotland finished third in Group C with three points and a goal difference of -3. They then had to wait to see if they would advance as one of the eight best third-place teams in the expanded 48-team tournament, which now includes a round of 32. Ultimately, they placed 11th among third-place teams, missing the knockout stage. Other high-profile casualties included Uruguay and South Korea.
The final third-place ranking was determined by points, goal difference, goals scored, Fair Play ranking, and FIFA World Ranking as tiebreakers.
