Renault 5 EV Surprises as Top Pick in Goodwood Test Drive
I recently had the extraordinary opportunity to drive 11 diverse vehicles in a single day at the renowned Goodwood Motor Circuit, and my standout choice was an electric model costing less than £23,000. This experience, part of a media day event, allowed me to evaluate cars from various manufacturers on both track and public roads, while engaging directly with their representatives.
Unforgettable Driving Experience at Goodwood
The format mirrored the SMMT Test Day from the previous year, offering a limited timeframe to drive as many cars as possible. With approximately six hours at one of Britain's premier circuits, I managed to test all 11 vehicles, leading to some surprising conclusions after careful reflection.
Winner: Renault 5 (£22,995)
The Renault 5 has long been on my automotive wish list, and it did not disappoint. Having won 44 awards, including UK Car of the Year 2026, What Car? Car of the Year 2025, and Top Gear's Car of the Year 2024, the hype was justified. From the moment I set off on the road, its flawless driving dynamics were apparent. Despite its larger exterior appearance, it handled Britain's challenging roads with excellence, pivoting smoothly around the driver. While not the most powerful or rear-wheel drive, it stands out as one of the finest compact electric vehicles available, setting a high bar for competitors.
Runner Up: Rolls Royce Black Badge Ghost (£350,000)
Driving a Rolls Royce for the first time was a royal experience, with the Black Badge Ghost offering unparalleled luxury. Maneuvering this 6.75-litre V12 beast along Sussex lanes felt like a significant responsibility. Its ability to absorb road imperfections and glide over asphalt was extraordinary, providing a composed and steady ride even through bends. This motoring experience is one that lingers, making it a memorable second place.
Third Place: Alpine A110 R (£96,990)
Having previously driven the Alpine A110 R, I was eager to push it to track speeds under professional guidance. This lightweight car, built for cornering, offered a sensory overload as it hugged the tarmac. High-speed cornering felt like a ballet, requiring precise timing for braking and acceleration. It was a thrilling learning curve, reminiscent of mastering a complex dance, and solidified its position as a top performer.
