Max Verstappen Responds to Nurburgring Disqualification After Tyre Controversy
Max Verstappen has issued a formal statement following the dramatic disqualification that stripped him and his teammates of a hard-fought victory at the Nurburgring Nordschleife. The four-time Formula One world champion, competing in the Nurburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS), saw his weekend triumph overturned in a post-race ruling that has sent shockwaves through the motorsport community.
Race Win Cancelled Due to Tyre Regulation Breach
Verstappen teamed up with drivers Daniel Juncadella and Jules Gounon in a Mercedes-AMG GT3 for the second race of the NLS season, delivering a commanding performance that saw the trio secure a comfortable win. They finished more than a minute ahead of their nearest competitors, initially celebrating what appeared to be a flawless victory on one of racing's most challenging circuits.
However, officials later discovered a critical regulation violation: the team had used seven sets of tyres during the event, exceeding the strict six-set limit allocated for both qualifying sessions and the race itself. This breach led to an immediate retrospective disqualification, with the race victory being rescinded and officially awarded to the Rowe Racing pairing of Don Harper and Jordan Pepper.
Verstappen Racing Issues Statement on Disappointing Outcome
Through his Verstappen Racing brand, the Dutch driver addressed the controversial outcome with a brief but resilient message. "Tough outcome, but we keep moving. A lot to take from the weekend and plenty to look forward to," the statement read, reflecting a forward-looking attitude despite the setback.
Mercedes-AMG also expressed significant disappointment over the surprising disqualification. Stefan Wendl, head of Mercedes-AMG customer racing, provided detailed comments, acknowledging the team's error while praising the overall racing experience. "The NLS weekend will remain in our memories for a long time. We saw pure racing on the track, experienced an extraordinary day in terms of atmosphere and were initially delighted with the supposed race victory," Wendl stated.
He continued, "The disappointment was all the greater when we realised that we had made a mistake behind the scenes that morning and the race organisers were forced to disqualify the winning car. That hurts, and naturally everyone involved is very disappointed. It shows once again that you can only win on the Nordschleife if everything comes together."
Analysis and Future Racing Plans for Verstappen
The Winward Racing team, managing the deployment of the performance cars, was competing in this specific line-up for the first time in the NLS series. Wendl emphasised the need for thorough analysis of the mistakes while extracting positive lessons from the weekend. "Now we need to analyse the mistakes, whilst also taking the positive lessons from the weekend on board and focusing on the remaining preparatory races as well as the 24-hour race," he added.
Looking ahead, Verstappen is expected to return to the Nurburgring Nordschleife, famously nicknamed the Green Hell, for the prestigious 24 Hours of Nurburgring event in May. Furthermore, recent schedule changes in Formula One, including the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix due to Middle East conflicts, have opened a potential window for Verstappen to compete in the next NLS round, NLS3, as early as next month.
When questioned about the possibility of a swift comeback to the circuit, Verstappen responded optimistically, "We're looking into it. It depends if it is feasible, but I'm always happy to race here." This indicates his ongoing commitment to endurance racing despite the recent disqualification controversy.
