The removal of Christian Horner as Red Bull team principal marks the end of an era in Formula One and the most turbulent period in the team's history. Horner, who led the team since its formation in 2005, transformed it from a struggling operation into a dominant force with eight drivers' titles and six constructors' championships.
Horner's departure follows a period of internal strife, including allegations of inappropriate behaviour made by a female colleague in 2024. Although he was exonerated by an independent investigation, the controversy exposed deep divisions within the team, including a power struggle with parent company Red Bull GmbH and tensions with Max Verstappen's father, Jos Verstappen.
The situation escalated when Helmut Marko, a motorsport advisor and ally of the Verstappens, faced suspension, prompting Verstappen to threaten leaving the team. Despite Horner initially retaining support from Thai majority owner Chalerm Yoovidhya, the parent company eventually acted, leading to his removal.
Verstappen, a once-in-a-generation talent under contract until 2028, has expressed a desire for calm and focus on performance. However, the team has lost key personnel, including designer Adrian Newey and sporting director Jonathan Wheatley, while car performance has declined, with McLaren surpassing Red Bull this season.
Verstappen's dissatisfaction has attracted interest from other teams, including Mercedes, with whom he has held talks. Red Bull's decision to remove Horner may be an attempt to placate Verstappen and his father, securing the driver's future with the team.
