Polish Skater Hospitalised After Blade Strikes Face in Olympic Crash

In a distressing incident at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, Polish speed skater Kamila Sellier was stretchered off the ice after a competitor's blade sliced her above the left eye during the women's 1,500m short-track event on Friday. The gory accident left Sellier in a bloody mess, prompting race officials to pause the competition as medical staff attended to her.

Chaotic Collision on the Ice

The crash involved Sellier, 15-time Olympic medalist Ariana Fontana of Italy, and American skater Kristen Santos-Griswold. Santos-Griswold was penalised for an illegal lane pass that contributed to the pile-up, denying her a place in the quarter-finals. As Sellier received urgent attention, a large white sheet was raised to shield the view of the packed crowd inside the Milano Ice Skating Arena, gathered for the final night of short-track speed skating.

Aftermath and Team Reactions

Despite the severity of the injury, Sellier managed to give a thumbs-up to the crowd as she was taken away, leaving a trail of blood in the final corner of the track that workers had to clean during the break. Her teammates expressed deep concern, with Natalia Maliszewska stating, "My thoughts are with her. I can’t think of anything else." Gabriela Topolska added, "These aren't common accidents, but they do happen. Kamila already has one of them, from a skate on her face. Kamila has a cut in her skin, with stitches."

Polish officials confirmed that Sellier's eye was unharmed, but she required stitches at the arena before being transported to a hospital for further tests. Meanwhile, Fontana's skinsuit was damaged in the crash, and she received treatment from her physiotherapist for a left hip issue during the pause. She ultimately finished second to Hanne Desmet of Belgium, advancing to the semi-finals and later narrowly edging Zhang Chutong to reach the finals.

Fontana's Olympic Pursuit

Ariana Fontana, the reigning Olympic silver medalist in the 1,500m, was aiming to equal Norwegian cross-country skier Marit Bjoergen as the most decorated Winter Olympian. Earlier in the Games, the home favourite had secured gold in the 2,000m mixed relay and silver in the 500m and 3,000m relay events. However, she could only manage a fifth-place finish in the finals, missing out on an additional medal.

The incident underscores the inherent risks in high-speed short-track speed skating, where collisions and blade injuries, though rare, can have serious consequences. As the Olympic community rallies around Sellier, her recovery and the ongoing competitions remain in focus.
