Maro Itoje Denies England Rift After Clash with Fin Smith in Italy Defeat
Maro Itoje has firmly dismissed suggestions of internal discord within the England rugby squad following his heated exchange with fly-half Fin Smith during last week's humiliating 23-18 loss to Italy in Rome. The captain asserted that the confrontation actually underscores the team's unity and open communication.
On-Field Spat Highlights Decision-Making Debate
During the 43rd minute of the match, with England leading 12-10, Itoje was heard shouting at Smith, "don't argue with me, take the three," as the fly-half advocated for kicking to the corner to pursue a try. The disagreement involved vice-captains Ellis Genge, who supported Smith's aggressive approach, and Jamie George, who favoured a penalty kick at goal. Itoje ultimately overruled Smith, leading to a successful penalty that extended England's lead to 18-10 before the team's collapse, which included yellow cards for Sam Underhill and Itoje.
Itoje Emphasises Squad Harmony and Resilience
In response to media scrutiny, Itoje stated, "There's no crack, there's no crack between us. He's a good guy and I get on with him very well." He explained that strong relationships allow for frank discussions and quick resolutions, noting they even laughed about the incident on the pitch afterwards. Itoje believes such exchanges are positive, indicating teammates feel comfortable expressing views, and described it as "the most kosher of fallouts that the world has ever seen."
Critical Six Nations Finale Looms Against France
The defeat leaves England facing a must-win scenario against France this weekend to avoid their worst-ever Six Nations campaign. France, defending champions and table-toppers, likely need only a bonus-point victory to secure the title, intensifying the challenge for Steve Borthwick's side. England assistant coach Joe El-Abd acknowledged the team's struggles, saying, "It's been a difficult Six Nations. We're all hurting." He emphasised ongoing efforts to analyse errors and improve performance ahead of the crucial clash.
