During the 43rd minute of the match, with England leading 12-10, Itoje was heard shouting at Smith, "don't argue with me, take the three," as the fly-half advocated for kicking to the corner to pursue a try. The disagreement involved vice-captains Ellis Genge, who supported Smith's aggressive approach, and Jamie George, who favoured a penalty kick at goal. Itoje ultimately overruled Smith, leading to a successful penalty that extended England's lead to 18-10 before the team's collapse, which included yellow cards for Sam Underhill and Itoje.
