Jos Buttler Vows England Return Despite Disappointing T20 World Cup Performance
Jos Buttler Eyes England Comeback After Poor T20 World Cup

Jos Buttler has openly admitted to having a "poor tournament" during the recent T20 World Cup, yet the seasoned cricketer remains resolutely hopeful about playing for England again in the future. Buttler, aged 35, managed to accumulate only 87 runs across his eight innings in the competition, a performance that fell significantly short of expectations as England advanced to the semi-finals.

Buttler's International Ambitions Remain Strong

The former limited-overs captain, who was instrumental in England's 2019 ODI World Cup victory and their T20 triumph in Australia in 2022, recognises that his international future now rests entirely with the selectors. Despite this, Buttler, who continues to hold a central contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), has not abandoned his aspirations to represent his country once more.

Reflections on Performance and Future Prospects

In a candid discussion on his For the Love of Cricket podcast with Stuart Broad, Buttler expressed his disappointment but also highlighted his recent form. "Obviously I had a poor tournament, which is disappointing, but I have been playing some of the best cricket of my career in recent years, so hopefully I can get back to playing my best," he stated. He further added, "I certainly have ambitions to play for England again, but no longer being a captain, I am not a selector and whatever, so what will be, will be. Yeah, we will see."

Post-Tournament Reset and Recovery

Following the World Cup, Buttler took a deliberate break from cricket, spending time with his family "up the mountains" in France to achieve a complete mental and physical reset. He described this period as essential, saying, "I couldn't have been further away from cricket, which for me at the time was just perfect. It is exactly what I needed."

Buttler elaborated on his need for distance from the game, explaining, "Obviously the tournament didn't go personally how I would have liked it to go, and I just felt like I needed some space from cricket and not to think about the game, and I could not have been further away from cricket where I was in that week. It was really refreshing – I really enjoyed it, a complete sort of release."

Analyzing the Setback and Moving Forward

As he begins to reflect on his performance, Buttler acknowledged the uncertainties in cricket. "Slowly but surely, I would say at the start of this week, I am just starting to reflect a bit and have a few thoughts about what is important to me and my cricket, and why it probably didn't go quite as I would've liked," he shared. He continued, "There's elements that I actually don't really know exactly. For all your best intentions and hard work and efforts to perform, it just didn't work, and sometimes that is OK as well. That is something I have had to realise. It wasn't for a lack of effort, it just didn't quite happen."

With this perspective, Buttler is now focused on his return to the sport. He confirmed, "So I have had a bit of time off and am now starting that process again of getting back into cricket." His immediate plans include playing for the Gujarat Titans in the upcoming Indian Premier League, where he aims to regain his form and demonstrate his readiness for future international call-ups.
