Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has insisted he will remain in his role despite Labour suffering severe losses in the local elections, acknowledging the results were “tough” but affirming his commitment to delivering the changes he promised.
Starmer Accepts Responsibility
Speaking at Kingsdown Methodist Church in Ealing, west London, on Friday morning, Starmer said: “The results are tough, they are very tough, and there’s no sugarcoating it. We have lost brilliant Labour representatives across the country, these are people who put so much into their communities, so much into our party. And that hurts, and it should hurt, and I take responsibility.”
He added that “days like this don’t weaken my resolve to deliver the change that I promised,” indicating his determination to continue as Prime Minister despite the electoral setbacks.
Reform UK Gains Ground
Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party made significant gains across the country as hundreds of Labour councillors were voted out, increasing pressure on the Prime Minister. The losses are expected to deepen as vote counting proceeds throughout Friday in English local elections, as well as contests for the Scottish Parliament and Welsh Senedd.
Historic Losses in Wales and Scotland
In Wales, Labour is projected to lose the national vote for the first time in over a century, while in Scotland, the SNP appears set to remain the largest party after 19 years in power. These results mark a major shift in the political landscape, with traditional Labour strongholds showing signs of erosion.
Starmer’s leadership is now under intense scrutiny, with many within the party questioning the direction of his policies and strategy. However, the Prime Minister remains resolute, vowing to press ahead with his agenda for change despite the electoral backlash.
