Andy Farrell may look at ease ahead of the first Test, but the British and Irish Lions head coach knows his team must be in physical and mental control against a Wallabies side that, despite a depleted team sheet, should not be underestimated. Farrell was seen enjoying a relaxed drink in Brisbane on Thursday, reflecting a calm demeanour as the series opener approaches.
The Lions boss had a chance encounter with former rugby league enforcer Gorden Tallis, who reminded him that underdog status can be a powerful motivator. Farrell cautioned that Australia will be thinking exactly the same as his own squad, warning that favourites tag means little come game time. The Wallabies’ lineup features several gaps, including the absence of key players Rob Valetini, Will Skelton and Langi Gleeson, with Tom Lynagh making his first Test start at fly-half and uncapped flanker Nick Champion de Crespigny earning a debut.
Despite these holes, Farrell has selected a powerful forward pack to test Australia physically. Ellis Genge, Joe McCarthy and Tom Curry have been chosen to provide a full-frontal examination, with Tadhg Beirne earning the blindside berth for his lineout presence and turnover ability. The Lions also boast strong experience in the backline, with Finn Russell, Sione Tuipulotu and Huw Jones forming a Scottish midfield trio, while Tommy Freeman offers aerial prowess.
Australia coach Joe Schmidt offered little to inspire confidence in a home win, acknowledging that Lynagh must have the game of his life and that someone must fill the void left by Valetini’s absence. The Lions, meanwhile, have depth on the bench to capitalise if the Wallabies’ foundations wobble. Farrell’s side will aim to assert dominance from the outset, with the series potentially unfolding differently to expectations.
