Brisbane Broncos fullback Reece Walsh has credited his two-year-old daughter Leila with transforming his life and career, as he prepares for Saturday night's NRL preliminary final against the Warriors. The 21-year-old became emotional when discussing the role fatherhood has played in keeping him grounded and focused.
Walsh's tattoos reflect the profound impact of his daughter. On his left arm, he has her name and a clock showing the time she was born. A lion and cub tattoo on his left leg symbolises his role as a protector. 'That represents me looking after my daughter,' he said.
The young star's career was at a crossroads in 2021 when he was suspended for cocaine possession while playing for the New Zealand Warriors. He returned to the Broncos this season to be closer to Leila, who lives in Brisbane. 'She calms me down. Not everything is about footy and a job. When I step out and see my little one, I am Dad,' Walsh said.
Walsh's improved conduct has been noted after he sought help from a sports psychologist following a three-week suspension earlier this season for dissent. 'I want to be the best version of myself on and off the field,' he said. 'I am lucky to have awesome people around me. When I am stepping out of line they pull me in line real quick.'
