Six Georgian Rugby Internationals Charged After Wada Investigation into Doping 'Scheme'
Six Georgia rugby players and a team official have been charged with anti-doping rule violations following a major investigation by the World Anti-Doping Agency and World Rugby. The probe, known as "Operation Obsidian", uncovered a sophisticated scheme involving alleged urine sample substitution and advance warnings about drug tests.
Investigation Uncovers Systematic Violations
The joint investigation conducted by Wada and World Rugby found five separate instances where players allegedly swapped urine samples to avoid detection of banned substances. The period under investigation specifically covered the extended build-up to the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France, with irregularities first identified through World Rugby's athlete passport management programme.
Wada President Witold Banka stated: "What has been happening in Georgian rugby is outrageous and will send shockwaves through Georgian sport and government, as well as the global game of rugby." Banka praised the collaborative efforts between Wada's Intelligence & Investigations team and World Rugby in pursuing the operation with "determination and professionalism."
Multiple Layers of Corruption Exposed
The investigation revealed multiple layers of anti-doping violations:
- Employees of Georgia's national anti-doping agency GADA allegedly tipped off players about upcoming tests
- Doping control officers failed to properly observe athletes during testing procedures
- Officers did not witness urine collection, constituting clear violations of anti-doping protocols
World Rugby confirmed the six players and team support personnel were charged and sanctioned in relation to what they described as an "orchestrated scheme involving recreational drugs and sample substitution."
Fallout and Consequences
The scandal has prompted Wada to lose confidence in Georgia's anti-doping agency GADA, with Banka warning that "wholesale changes must now be made by the relevant authorities." Georgia's rugby team finished bottom of their pool at the 2023 Rugby World Cup without securing a single victory during the tournament.
Reuters has contacted Georgia Rugby for comment regarding the charges and sanctions. The investigation represents one of the most significant doping scandals in recent rugby history, highlighting systemic failures in anti-doping protocols within Georgian rugby institutions.
