Folarin Balogun has been named in the USA starting XI for their World Cup last-16 clash against Belgium, despite a legal threat from the Belgian FA and widespread criticism over FIFA's decision to overturn his red card suspension. The forward was initially banned after being sent off against Bosnia & Herzegovina, but a FIFA Disciplinary Committee suspended the ban for one year—only the second time a World Cup red card has been overturned.
Controversial Decision Sparks Outrage
UEFA expressed “disbelief,” calling the overturn “unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable.” The Belgian FA stated it would contest Balogun's eligibility, having previously voiced “deep concern.” Balogun also received a $40,000 (£29,800) fine, half of which is payable by the US Soccer Federation.
Trump Call Revealed
FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed in a statement that he received a call from US President Donald Trump regarding Balogun's case, but insisted the decision was made independently by FIFA's judicial bodies. “I regularly discuss World Cup matters with the US President,” Infantino wrote, adding that he respects the autonomy of the disciplinary committee.
USA boss Mauricio Pochettino has kept faith in Balogun, who has scored three goals in the tournament so far. The match against Belgium is underway amid the ongoing legal and political controversy.
