Cole Palmer on England World Cup Snub: 'I'm Not Crying'

Chelsea star Cole Palmer has broken his silence after being controversially omitted from Thomas Tuchel's 26-man England squad for the 2026 World Cup. The 24-year-old playmaker, who scored a crucial goal in the Euro 2024 final under Gareth Southgate, was one of several high-profile players left at home, alongside Harry Maguire, Phil Foden, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Morgan Gibbs-White.

Injury-Hit Season and Loss of Form

Speaking to iD magazine, Palmer acknowledged that his injury-plagued campaign for Chelsea played a significant role in his exclusion. "This season hasn't been the best, but it is what it is," he said. "I'm not crying over a decision you can't change, and I hope the lads make it all the way." Palmer's season was marred by fitness issues and the club's managerial instability, leading to his leanest campaign in terms of goals and appearances since joining Chelsea.

Tuchel's Explanation

Tuchel explained his decision after announcing the squad, stating: "I think he suffers from a lack of individual form within the club. He was not as decisive or as influential as he was in the last seasons, throughout the whole season." The German manager also noted Palmer's lack of impact during England camps: "His record with us was just not outstanding, not good enough to make him 'no matter what, he is coming'. He had to pull out injured several times, and when he was in camp he did not have the impact that we all wanted."

Palmer's Plans for the Summer

With his first summer free from tournament duty since 2022, Palmer plans to rest and recharge before returning to Chelsea for pre-season under new manager Xabi Alonso. "I'm going to relax this summer, rest for the first time in three or four years, before getting back to what I love," he said. When asked if he would watch England's World Cup games, Palmer added: "If I'm not doing anything, then I'll watch the matches, yeah."

Impact of the Snub

Palmer's omission marks a dramatic fall from grace after his heroics at Euro 2024, where he came off the bench to score a sensational equaliser in the final. However, a combination of injuries and inconsistent form for Chelsea saw him lose his place in Tuchel's plans. The decision has sparked debate among fans, with many questioning whether the 24-year-old should have been included despite his struggles.
