Emma Raducanu pushed world number one Aryna Sabalenka to the limit in a three-hour, nine-minute thriller at the Cincinnati Open, eventually losing 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-6 (5) in the third round. The 22-year-old Briton showed immense resilience, recovering from a set down and forcing a deciding tie-break before Sabalenka's experience prevailed.
Raducanu's serving, a weakness earlier this season, improved dramatically as she landed 82% of first serves in the second set and won 75% of points behind it. She also mixed her game effectively, using her backhand slice and attacking with her forehand at key moments. Despite her frustration after losing the first set, Raducanu bounced back strongly, breaking Sabalenka at 3-3 in the second set to level the match.
Sabalenka, who made 72 unforced errors, struggled with her form but showed her champion mentality by winning 16 consecutive tie-breaks. The Belarusian also demonstrated tactical growth, frequently approaching the net in crucial points, aided by new coach Max Mirnyi. She sealed victory with an ace in the final tie-break.
The match was played in stifling 32°C heat and humidity, with both players taking a bathroom break before the final set. Raducanu's coach, Francisco Roig, repeatedly told her during the break: "You're better than her." Raducanu fought off four break points in a 20-minute game at 3-4 in the final set, but ultimately fell just short against the world number one.
