Emma Raducanu Withdraws from Miami Open Amid Lingering Virus Battle
Raducanu Withdraws from Miami Open Due to Persistent Virus

British tennis number one Emma Raducanu has officially withdrawn from the upcoming Miami Open tournament. This decision comes as the young athlete continues her ongoing battle with a persistent virus that has plagued her since the beginning of February, severely impacting her performance and season consistency.

Virus Disrupts Sunshine Double Campaign

Raducanu recently participated in the Indian Wells tournament last week, where she managed to advance to the second round. However, she will now miss the second leg of the prestigious Sunshine Double series in Miami. Her best result this season occurred on February 7th, when she reached the final in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Unfortunately, she appeared completely exhausted during her defeat to Sorana Cirstea, and it was later revealed she had contracted a virus at that time.

Season Struggles and Health Challenges

The virus has significantly hindered Raducanu's performance, leading to first-round defeats in both Doha and Dubai. According to sources, she is still actively trying to recover fully from this illness. This health issue has compounded an already challenging season for the player, whose pre-season was disrupted by a foot injury and her decision to split from coach Francis Roig after the Australian Open. Consequently, her career has experienced a stop-start pattern, desperately needing more consistency.

Brief Respite and Recent Performance

Raducanu showed some promising signs at Indian Wells last week, marking her first campaign with former coach Mark Petchey back in her team. With Petchey serving as a short-term hire alongside ex-professional Alexis Canter—who has been part of her camp since her impressive run in Transylvania—the 23-year-old delivered a strong performance, defeating Anastasia Zakharova 6-1, 6-3 in the first round.

However, her momentum was short-lived. In her second-round match, which lasted under an hour, Raducanu was decisively beaten by Amanda Anisimova, a Wimbledon and US Open finalist, managing to claim only two games. This outcome highlights the ongoing effects of the virus on her physical condition and competitive edge.
