Shearer warns Newcastle of backlash over Bruno sale

Alan Shearer has warned Newcastle United it would be a 'really poor look' if they sold Bruno Guimaraes this summer amid increasing interest from Premier League champions, Arsenal. Chronicle Live understands Newcastle remain braced for official contact from the Gunners over signing their captain, and their official stance at the moment is that Guimaraes is not for sale. However, having failed with a verbal £45m offer, presented by intermediaries, Arsenal believe that £65m could be enough to clinch Bruno's signature.

Guimaraes shines at World Cup

Guimaraes is currently starring in the World Cup for Brazil and grabbed his fourth assist of the competition when his incisive pass set up Gabriel Martinelli, ironically of Arsenal, to fire home their stoppage time winner in their 2-1 win over Japan in the round of 32. Only France's Michael Olise (five) has more assists in the competition than Guimaraes, who has underlined his credentials on the global stage with his performances in the USA so far this summer. His agent Alexis Malavolta is in the States with the 28-year-old, with Brazil now set to jet off to New York to face Norway in the last 16 on Sunday evening.

Shearer's warning to Newcastle

But should a move materialise, Shearer has warned Newcastle there will be huge fan anger. The Toon Army stomached Anthony Gordon's sale to Barcelona and would just about tolerate Sandro Tonali's departure. But if Guimaraes was sold, there would be serious questions over the club's direction. And for that reason, Shearer hopes talk of his possible departure is nothing more than 'trash'.

"I think it would look be a really poor look for Newcastle to sell their best player," Shearer told Betfair. "You can see what he's doing for Brazil in this World Cup. I think he's been one of their best players. He is a brilliant talent. And with Anthony Gordon going, I think it would be a really poor look if Newcastle were to sell Bruno. And it would not go down well with the fans. I don't see it happening. I'd be surprised if it were to happen. I hope it's just paper talk and there's no truth in that because it would be a big blow to Newcastle. There'd be a lot of angry fans if he were to go."

"I think it's even more so now because of social media and everyone has an opinion and everyone can say what they want. 99% of it is going to be trash, and I do hope it's trash about Bruno," Shearer added.
