Packing for a summer holiday can be a challenge, especially when trying to keep costs low by using hand luggage only. Most airlines now offer one small carry-on bag for free, but tight restrictions mean even minor packing errors can lead to unexpected fees at the gate. Matthew Corrigan, CEO of Trtl Travel, warns: 'Airlines such as Ryanair, British Airways, easyJet and Jet2 are cracking down on hand luggage passengers. One of the main drawbacks of heading off on holiday with only a carry-on bag is significantly less space for your belongings.'
Three Items to Leave Behind
To avoid extra charges and make the most of limited space, travellers should reconsider packing certain everyday items. Corrigan advises: 'Avoid packing items that will be provided by the accommodation, such as hairdryers, towels, and toiletries. Only bring items you know you'll use, and try to share phone chargers and other technology wherever possible.'
Hairdryers are bulky and often provided by hotels or rental properties, making them unnecessary. Towels are another space-waster unless staying somewhere that doesn't supply them. Toiletries not only add weight but larger liquid containers can cause security issues; travel-sized alternatives or buying upon arrival are smarter choices.
Additional Tips for Cold Destinations
For those heading to colder climates, bulky garments like coats or thick jumpers should be worn onto the plane rather than packed. 'It's best to wear large items such as jumpers and coats onto the plane rather than packing them,' Corrigan notes. 'This frees up space and ensures you don't get cold during the flight.'
