Arteta Keeps Transfer Options Open as Arsenal Face Midfield Crisis
Mikel Arteta has openly discussed Arsenal's urgent need to address their midfield shortage following the significant injury to summer signing Mikel Merino. The Gunners' manager confirmed the club is actively exploring all available options as the transfer window deadline rapidly approaches.
Former Gunner Emerges as Potential Short-Term Solution
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the 32-year-old former Arsenal midfielder who has been training with the club's under-21 squad, has emerged as a genuine possibility for a surprise return. Arteta refused to dismiss the idea when questioned about the ex-England international, who has been without a club since leaving Besiktas last summer.
"We explore every option," Arteta stated simply when asked specifically about Oxlade-Chamberlain's potential involvement. The experienced midfielder participated in a first-team training session at the end of January, indicating his fitness levels are being monitored closely by the coaching staff.
Merino Injury Creates Immediate Need
The pressing need for midfield reinforcement stems from Merino's serious foot injury sustained during Arsenal's defeat to Manchester United. The Spanish international requires surgery and is expected to be sidelined for approximately four months, leaving a substantial gap in Arteta's squad during a crucial period of the season.
"When you lose a big player like this in the squad with four months to go and all the competitions to play for, you need to look," Arteta explained during his press conference. "We need to do everything that we possibly can to see if we have a player that is available."
The Arsenal manager emphasized the specific challenges of finding a suitable replacement at this stage of the season: "At this level, especially for four months, you have to be a player that has the capacity to adapt immediately and impact the team. That's not easy. But if it were easy, we wouldn't be here. So, we need to find solutions and try."
Transfer Deadline Pressure Mounts
Arteta acknowledged the financial considerations involved in any potential signing, particularly after Arsenal's substantial summer spending. However, he maintained that the club has a responsibility to strengthen where necessary.
"We have the responsibility to do that," Arteta said regarding potential transfers. "It is true that we have done certain deals, but nothing different to the top clubs, I don't think. We have to see where are the parameters. We have to have the options and then present them."
The manager revealed that Arsenal's recruitment team is working diligently to identify suitable candidates: "We are on it. It's just the fact you want to make the right call with the right player because we really want to improve the team if we can. If not, we don't do it."
Saka Injury Update Provides Some Relief
In more positive news for Arsenal supporters, Arteta provided an encouraging update on Bukayo Saka's fitness after the England winger picked up a knock during the warm-up before the Leeds United match.
"We have to wait," Arteta cautioned. "Today he was better, but we have to see how he responds and make a decision. It doesn't look like something too serious, whether he's available for tomorrow or the weekend we will see."
Arsenal's attacking depth provides some comfort regarding Saka's potential absence, with Noni Madueke having impressed in the 4-0 victory over Leeds United, contributing both a goal and an assist. Additional options include Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli, both capable of operating on the right flank if required.
The coming days will prove crucial for Arsenal's season as Arteta and the recruitment team work against the clock to address their midfield deficiency while managing existing squad fitness concerns.
