Barcelona President Laporta Hints at Rashford Loan Extension Over Permanent Deal

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has indicated that the La Liga giants might opt to extend Marcus Rashford's loan from Manchester United rather than activate their £26 million option to buy the forward permanently. Rashford, 28, is currently on loan at Barcelona until the end of the season, having been sidelined by former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim before his move to Catalunya in July.

Rashford's Performance and Future at Barcelona

Since joining Barcelona, Marcus Rashford has contributed 20 goals and assists for the reigning La Liga champions. However, his form has dipped in 2026, with only five of those contributions coming this year. This decline in performance led to him losing his spot in Hansi Flick's starting lineup to Raphinha, who returned from injury just before the new year.

Despite Rashford's mixed results on the pitch, Laporta praised the England international's overall impact. "He has good numbers in goals and statistics, great chemistry in the locker room, and he is very involved with the Foundation," Laporta told Spanish outlet Jijantes. The Barcelona president also mentioned alternative financial arrangements, such as paying part of the buy option now and settling the remainder later.

Manchester United's Stance and Barcelona's Alternatives

Manchester United remain firm on their £26 million valuation for Rashford, a fee agreed upon when the loan deal was initially struck. Reports suggest Barcelona are hesitant to meet this price and have identified Chelsea star Pedro Neto as a potential alternative target.

Laporta's own future adds another layer of uncertainty to Rashford's situation. The president is preparing for a reelection bid on Sunday, with fintech entrepreneur Victor Font expected to be his main challenger, as was the case in 2021. A change in leadership could influence Barcelona's transfer decisions, including whether to pursue Rashford permanently or extend his loan.

Rashford's Desire to Stay at Barcelona

Marcus Rashford has publicly expressed his wish to remain at Barcelona beyond his current loan spell. In an interview with Catalan newspaper Sport back in December, he stated, "What I want is to stay at Barca. It's the ultimate goal, but it's not the reason I'm training hard and giving my all. The purpose is to win. Barca is a huge, fantastic club, built to win titles."

Rashford's next opportunity to impress Barcelona's management could come in their upcoming La Liga match against Sevilla on Sunday. The forward, who came on as a substitute in Tuesday's 1-1 Champions League draw with Newcastle, will be hoping for a starting role to bolster his case for a longer stay at the club.

As the season progresses, Barcelona must weigh Rashford's contributions against their financial constraints and strategic needs. With the loan spell nearing its end and a permanent transfer at risk, the coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether Rashford's future lies in Spain or if he returns to Manchester United.
