Chelsea are preparing to launch a significant double transfer move this month, with new head coach Liam Rosenior poised to receive a major boost in the winter market.
Defensive Target Identified
The Blues are set to push forward with a bid for Rennes' highly-rated 20-year-old defender Jeremy Jacquet. The young French centre-back has attracted considerable attention with his performances in Ligue 1, putting him on the radar of several elite clubs.
However, Chelsea face competition for his signature, with both Arsenal and Bayern Munich also listed as potential suitors. Furthermore, Rennes are reportedly reluctant to sell one of their key assets midway through the season, which could complicate negotiations.
Chelsea's pursuit of defensive reinforcements is driven by necessity. First-choice centre-back Levi Colwill has not played at all this season due to a serious ACL injury. The club had previously attempted to sign Dean Huijsen, only for the player to choose a move to Real Madrid instead.
Midfield Addition Also on the Cards
Alongside the move for Jacquet, Chelsea are also ready to explore signing an attacking midfielder before the transfer window closes on February 2. This need has been exacerbated by the ongoing fitness struggles of star player Cole Palmer.
Palmer, the team's talisman, has been restricted to just 12 appearances this term because of a persistent groin issue. The squad has also lost the services of Facundo Buonanotte, whose season-long loan from Brighton was cut short this week, allowing the Argentine to join Leeds United.
Rosenior's Cautious Approach
Speaking to the press on Thursday, the newly-appointed Chelsea manager, who replaced Enzo Maresca, outlined his measured approach to the January market. "I think if we do [make signings in January] it needs to be the right player," Rosenior stated.
He emphasised the importance of patience and assessment, adding, "We have conversations every day, myself and the board, about potential transfers, both out and in. But at the same time, I need to focus on the players in the building." Rosenior concluded by saying the club would act decisively if the right opportunity presented itself.
This potential double move signals the first steps for Rosenior in reshaping the squad he inherited, with the club's ownership showing a continued willingness to invest heavily during the winter transfer period.
