PSV Eindhoven's technical director, Ernest Stewart, has publicly confirmed that the proposed £32 million sale of American striker Ricardo Pepi to Premier League side Fulham has definitively fallen through. The breakdown occurred after the clubs failed to reach an agreement on the specific timing for the transfer of responsibility for the player, particularly concerning injury risks.
Medical Completed but Deal Unravels
Ricardo Pepi, the 23-year-old USA international, travelled to London last Thursday to undergo a medical examination after PSV and Fulham had initially agreed a fee in principle for a summer transfer. Following the medical, Pepi returned to the Netherlands to play for PSV in their weekend match against Telstar, with the intention of finishing the current season at his club.
Injury Liability Emerges as Sticking Point
However, negotiations ultimately stalled over finer contractual details, with a key point of contention being the clauses outlining what would happen if the player sustained an injury during the transitional period. This issue of when responsibility for Pepi would formally transfer from PSV to Fulham proved insurmountable, leading to the collapse of the high-profile deal.
In an interview with ESPN Netherlands, Ernest Stewart provided further insight into the protracted negotiations. "We were, of course, already in talks with Fulham during the winter break when they came just before the transfer window closed," Stewart explained. "Pepi flew to London for a medical at Fulham ahead of a £35m move that has now collapsed. We couldn't bring in a replacement anymore, so at that moment, the transfer couldn't go through. But a week later we got back in talks and the process got underway."
Stewart emphasised the critical nature of the responsibility clause, stating, "That responsibility for the player was a very important detail that always played a role. And while we did get a bit closer to each other in that regard, ultimately, we remained too far apart."
Player Disappointment and Future Prospects
The technical director expressed sympathy for Pepi, acknowledging the striker's strong desire to complete the move. "Ricardo really wanted this. It is an unpleasant situation, especially for Ricardo," Stewart said. "We are, of course, happy that we are retaining a good striker."
Despite the current impasse, Fulham are reported to retain a significant interest in the American forward and are likely to revisit negotiations in the summer. This timing would precede Pepi's expected involvement with the United States national team squad for the upcoming World Cup tournament.
Interest in the prolific striker extends beyond Fulham, with other Premier League clubs monitoring the situation. Both Everton and West Ham United have also demonstrated concrete interest in acquiring the services of the 23-year-old forward, potentially setting the stage for a competitive bidding process in the next transfer window.
