Arsenal Poised for Financial Boost from Kiwior Transfer Saga
Arsenal are in line to receive a significant financial windfall this summer, thanks to a shrewd sell-on clause inserted into the deal that saw defender Jakub Kiwior depart for Porto. The Gunners could bank an extra £1.7 million if reported interest from Italian giants Juventus materialises into a £30 million transfer.
Porto Loan with Permanent Clause
Kiwior, the 26-year-old Poland international, left Arsenal in September on a season-long loan to Portuguese side Porto. This move was primarily to accommodate the arrival of new signing Piero Hincapie at the Emirates Stadium. The loan agreement includes an obligation to buy, meaning Porto are committed to making the transfer permanent for approximately £23 million when the summer window opens.
However, this obligation does not necessarily guarantee Kiwior will remain at the Estádio do Dragão next season. According to reputable Italian sports outlet Tuttosport, Juventus have reignited their long-standing interest in the versatile defender. Kiwior, who can operate effectively as a centre-back or on the left side of a four-man defence, has previously played in Italy for Spezia before his £21 million move to Arsenal in January 2023.
Juventus' Defensive Reinforcement Plans
Juventus are reportedly preparing a formal £30 million bid to secure Kiwior's services. Porto have set this asking price, and should the deal proceed, Arsenal's sell-on clause would be triggered, netting the North London club a welcome £1.7 million bonus. The player himself is understood to be keen on a return to Serie A, where he previously plied his trade.
The Bianconeri view Kiwior as a valuable addition to compete with their current defensive options, including former Bournemouth and Newcastle centre-back Lloyd Kelly. During his time at Arsenal, Kiwior made 68 appearances for the Gunners, contributing across various competitions before seeking more regular first-team football.
Kiwior's Impressive Porto Form
Since joining Porto, Kiwior has established himself as a defensive stalwart under manager Francesco Farioli. He has started 19 out of 22 Primeira Liga matches this season, helping Porto build a commanding seven-point lead at the top of the table. Notably, the team has conceded only 10 goals in the league, with Kiwior playing a key role in achieving 17 clean sheets.
His performances have been so consistent that he recently partnered compatriot Jan Bednarek in defence. Despite competition from January signing Thiago Silva, Kiwior remains an integral part of Porto's squad and is expected to feature in their upcoming Europa League last-16 second leg against Stuttgart.
Player's Perspective on the Move
In a candid interview with Polish media outlet Laczy nas pilka in November, Kiwior revealed that it was his decision to request a loan move from Arsenal. He described a difficult conversation with manager Mikel Arteta, stating, "I'd never done this before, but I felt the time had come to speak with him face to face. He understood me and supported me."
Kiwior emphasised that while moving from the Premier League to the Primeira Liga might seem like a step back competitively, joining Porto was absolutely not a regression at club level. "At Porto, I have what I lacked in London: regular playing time. I feel great here," he affirmed, highlighting the importance of consistent minutes for his development and satisfaction.
This potential transfer saga underscores the complex nature of modern football deals, where loan agreements, buy clauses, and sell-on provisions can create unexpected financial benefits for selling clubs. Arsenal's foresight in including the sell-on clause now positions them to profit from Kiwior's continued success and market value appreciation.
