Italian football giants Juventus have significantly intensified their efforts to sign Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, following direct discussions with the player's representatives on Friday.
Juve Identify Vlahovic Replacement
Juventus view the 28-year-old France international as a prime candidate to replace their own forward, Dusan Vlahovic, whose contract expires this summer. The Serie A side's interest was first reported earlier this week, and Friday's talks mark a concrete step forward in their pursuit.
Palace Braced for Departure Amid Contract Stalemate
Crystal Palace had been preparing for this scenario, having offered Mateta a new contract last summer. Initially, there was optimism that an agreement could be reached, but subsequent negotiations have left a significant gap between the club's offer and the player's demands.
With just 18 months remaining on his current deal, Mateta is understood to be keen on seeking a new challenge abroad. While several Premier League clubs have made tentative enquiries in recent months, Juventus have now taken the lead in the race for his signature.
Valuation and Deal Structure Key Hurdles
The major obstacle for Juventus remains meeting Crystal Palace's valuation of the player. Given financial considerations, the Italian club is most likely to propose a deal involving an initial loan with an obligation to buy next summer.
Palace manager Oliver Glasner addressed the situation directly on Friday, stating: 'There will be a price where Crystal Palace say "18 months left in his contract, we do the deal if JP wants". If nobody pays this price, then JP will stay.'
Eagles Face Summer of Significant Change
Crystal Palace's potential loss of Mateta is part of a wider period of transition for the South London club. They are actively seeking a centre-back to replace Marc Guehi, who is set to join Manchester City. Furthermore, manager Oliver Glasner has confirmed he will leave the club at the end of the season.
In their scramble to bolster attacking options, Palace have reportedly considered several targets, including:
- Wolves' Jorgen Strand Larsen
- Strasbourg's Joaquín Panichelli
- Angers' Sidiki Cherif, with a deal reportedly in the works
The club is also aware of growing interest in their talented young midfielder, Adam Wharton, with several clubs expected to circle in the summer transfer window.
