Former Manchester United target Fermin Lopez delivered a stunning performance for Barcelona in their 7-2 Champions League demolition of Newcastle United this week, serving as a painful reminder of the club's failed pursuit of the midfielder last summer.
The 22-year-old, who was courted by United alongside other Premier League sides, scored once and controlled the midfield with tempo and intensity. His goal celebration, mimicking Barcelona icon Lionel Messi, underscored his deep affection for the club.
United had been prepared to table a £61 million bid for the Spain international in August, according to Spanish publication Sport. However, Lopez later told Mundo Deportivo that his loyalty to Barcelona meant he never considered leaving. 'My priority has always been to be at Barca,' he said. 'It was my dream to be here.'
Lopez, who has a contract until 2029, added: 'I don't want to leave. I love this club.' His commitment has been rewarded under manager Hansi Flick, who has shown faith in the midfielder. Over 38 matches in all competitions last season, Lopez netted 12 goals and supplied 16 assists.
Barcelona now face La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals next month, while United watch from afar as they battle to return to the competition.
