Man Utd Plan Five New Signings with Three Midfielders

Manchester United are planning a significant squad overhaul this summer, targeting at least five new signings as they prepare for their return to the Champions League. The Red Devils are particularly focused on bolstering their midfield, with up to three arrivals possible in that area.

Midfield Priority

United's midfield is the primary area of concern, especially with Casemiro set to depart upon the expiry of his contract in June. The club has been linked with several Premier League stars, including Tyler Adams, Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, Matheus Fernandes, Joao Gomes, Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Adam Wharton. Additionally, Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni and Atalanta's Ederson are rumoured targets.

According to the Sun, United intend to sign two midfielders initially, but the sale of Manuel Ugarte could provide the funds to secure a third. Anderson is believed to be the top target and will have a chance to impress interim manager Michael Carrick when Nottingham Forest visit Old Trafford on Sunday. However, Manchester City are also interested, and United are wary of a bidding war for the England international.

Other Positions Under Review

Beyond midfield, United are looking to strengthen in several other positions. A new backup goalkeeper is wanted, with Andre Onana potentially joining Trabzonspor permanently and Altay Bayindir seeking more playing time. Left-back is another area of focus, despite Luke Shaw's largely injury-free season, as Tyrell Malacia's contract expires and Patrick Dorgu has impressed further forward.

A backup striker is also on the shopping list, with Joshua Zirkzee tipped to leave, creating room for a No. 9 to compete with Benjamin Sesko. The dull 0-0 draw at Sunderland on Saturday highlighted the need for depth, as interim manager Michael Carrick was forced into changes due to the absences of Casemiro and Sesko, and the team's performance suffered.

Transfer Targets and Negotiations

United have reportedly held informal talks with relegated Wolves over Joao Gomes. West Ham could follow Wolves into the Championship, potentially pressuring them into selling Matheus Fernandes. Tchouameni may also be available after a reported bust-up with Real Madrid teammate Federico Valverde. Another versatile target is Myles Lewis-Skelly, who can play both left-back and midfield, and has recently broken back into Arsenal's starting XI after a frustrating season on the bench.
